Instagram gets a step closer to being a perfect real-time reporting tool through InstMap

Content is being produced in all forms and generated with a power so great that one in thirty people in the world creates some form of it every minute. This trend is only going forward, since more and more local and niche platforms appear, and this poses great problems for people working in industries where extracting relevant content from the bulk of everything available is core to their activity, such as journalists or statisticians. And at this level of detail, getting a perspective over some particular content exactly when you need it is something that professionals would die to have.

When talking about real-time evidence about when and where Instagram photos are being taken, a useful tool might prove to be InstMap. This is a browser-based Google Map on which you can see, in real-time, in any point of the world, what are most recent photos taken. You can either activate geo-location capabilities so that the map locates you automatically, or choose a destination and then press a camera button which reveals the content in your area.

The so-far inherent and predictable use for regular Instagrammers has been “geeking” around to meet people in their neighborhood, with significant reports of users finding about interesting people doing interesting stuff around their area. Ok, guilty as charged – the above phrasing is code name for “guys flirting with gals”, and the latter gaining a strong following on Instagram, which would make it an indirect nice social media awareness tool. But apart from that, InstMap could prove to be an interesting simple tool to use for journalists trying to cover very specific activities in an area, by creating leads which they could follow-up by contacting the Instagram user which create a particularly interesting photo.

Instagram may still be a place where a large proportion of pictures are still selfies or other type of content depicting personal facts (with more than 200 million pictures having been tagged with the #selfie hashtag, for instance), but news outlets have started to shift to Instagram as a means to create stories and even editorials tailored to a newer audience. It is in this environment that Ruslan Tarakanov, an Ukrainian developer currently based in Cambodia, hopes that InstMap could work and thrive. Be sure to contact him for more info on InstMap and the way Instagram is shaping real-time fact-checking.
